Written for the coronation of Holy Roman Emperor Leopold II as King of Bohemia, La clemenza di Tito exalts the Enlightenment traits of this incoming regime. Metastasio’s cosmopolitan grasp of these ideals find a new home in Mozart’s setting to provide another brilliant commentary on society and his times. Italian scholar Emanuel Rota (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign) and musicologist Francesco Izzo (University of Southampton, UK) are joined by Conductor Jane Glover to delve into the Enlightenment ideals championed by Mozart and Metastasio in this opera. (In partnership with Istituto Italiano di Cultura and the Austrian Consulate General)

University of Chicago instructor John Gibbons leads an exploration of Mozart’s final operatic gem La clemenza di Tito. General Director, Brian Dickie, will add to this dialogue and a private performance by artists from Chicago Opera Theater will augment the experience. Afterwards, participants receive an exclusive backstage tour and will attend opening night of La clemenza di Tito at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance at Millennium Park.

One of the most unwavering classics in the operatic canon, the story of Carmen has provided interpretive fodder for many great thinkers and artists. Panelists will discuss why this piece fuels continued artistic development in such mediums as film, music and theater. COT Director Andrew Eggert and Conductor Alexander Platt delve into Carmen’s deconstructionist unraveling by Peter Brook and the 21st century realization of this piece in Chicago Opera Theater’s new production of La Tragédie de Carmen. They are joined by Professor Samuel Amago who will explore acclaimed film director Carlos Saura's projection of Carmen onto cinematic screens in his flamenco retelling of this story (Presented in partnership with Instituto Cervantes of Chicago and the Museum of Contemporary Art)

The impact of action and inaction is examined in Britten’s courageous Owen Wingrave, in which a soldier, against the demands of legacy, chooses peace. Chicago Opera Theater artists join this Art Institute conversation examining pacifist expressions through art imagery and operatic vision. Members of COT’s Young Artists perform excerpts. Speakers  include COT Conductor Steuart Bedford, one of Britten’s close collaborators who conducted the first staged performance of Owen Wingrave in 1973, John Evans, Britten scholar and author currently editing Britten’s early diaries for publication in spring 2009, and Mary Sue Glosser, Creative Director, Lectures and Performances, AIC.
